service on the mall starting in about half an hour. the first family urges all americans to help honor dr. martin luther king jr., whose holiday is on monday. >> then tomorrow president obama and vice president biden are officially sworn in for their second terms. the inaugural ceremonies, the public ceremonies, will take place monday and will include performances by beyonce, james taylor, and kelly clarkson. >> it's going to be a show. and crews are still putting together the preparations for monday's inauguration. we have team coverage starting with tom sherwood who's at the national mall. tom, we don't get to see you on many saturdays. this must be something special. >> reporter: no, i usually have something else to do on saturday, but this is pretty cool down here. this is the largest tent behind me over here ever erected on the national mall. it's for the national day of service. about 100 different organizations are represented here today. they range from local to national and community groups. also here are military and

veterans groups, economic development, education, health care, you name it. it's all part of the national day of service for the obama inaugural. something is going on in all 50 states. this big tent opens at 9:30 to the public. you can come down and see all of these exhibits. there's plenty of room for everybody here at the mall at 12th street. we talked to a couple of the people inside about what they hope to do today. >> anyone can volunteer if you're ages 10 and up. we have everything from an e-mail pen pal program to getting involved with our friendship program. >> people are here for the national day of service. you'd like people to come and sign up. >> absolutely. we need volunteers. we are run by volunteers. we have over 1,000 volunteers. we're always looking for more volunteers. that's why we're out here. >> reporter: again, it's a national day of service. it won't be any good unless you participate. i'm tom sherwood live on the national mall. back to you. >> all right, tom. we're glad you canceled your

other plans to be with us. >> we feel very lucky. thanks, tom. if you're up early, you can see from tom's live shot that the sun's already out shining. >> but what effect will all that sun have on these temperatures? especially leading up to the inauguration. storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell continues our team coverage now. hey, chuck. >> good morning, richard and angie. good morning, everybody. after a week with very little sunshine, we jump into the weekend and the sunshine is back. we get to keep it for most if not all of your weekend. for now, bright sunshine. it's chilly out there, but it is january. 37 now at national airport. winds are out of the south. that will help initially, but it's a little off to a cool start. temperatures now for windchills in the upper 20s to near 30 degrees. nothing showing up on doppler. we'll stay dry today and tomorrow. our cold start will lead us with a chilly afternoon. temperatures today, upper 40s to near 50 with a substantial wind out of the south and southwest. we'll talk about tomorrow and monday coming up in a few.

>> chuck, thanks. in about 48 hours, many parts of d.c. will shut down for the inauguration. drivers might want to avoid downtown completely. the memorial bridge will be closed along with several streets. many around alcohol hicapitol h including ramps from 295, will be closed. parking will be strictly enforced. d.c. taxis will charge a $1 surcharge for every extra passenger. talking about the rails now. metro is also gearing up for the big day. today, crews will hold off on track work as crowds arrive in town. the agency is working to make sure that the thousands expected to take metro can get around quickly and safely. news 4's derek ward is live this morning at metro station in northwest where people will be lining up later today. good morning, derek. >> reporter: good morning. we hear they're already lining up. that's early planning. that's what metro is encouraging

you to do. joining me now is dan, a spokesperson with metro. it's not too early to get started. >> yeah, this weekend is the time to get all of this stuff out of the way before monday. you want to make sure you have a smart trip card or fare card for everyone in your group and make sure it's properly loaded. we're recommending the inaugural commemorative card. it has the image of president obama on it. it's $15, just $1 more than the cost of a normal one-day pass. it lets you take unlimited metro rail trips on the day you use it. on inauguration day it's good for the metro buses as well. we've announced special hours for our sales offices that are not normally open on the weekend. here at metro center, open until 10:00 p.m. tonight. tomorrow we've got special sales locations at nine stations. you can get all the details on our website. >> reporter: excellent. we've talked how to get down here. what about getting back? it's going to be a tendency for people to run closest to the event.

>> you want to try to go back to the same station you came from, if you can. what we're recommending for folks as part of our crowd management plan, we're recommending you travel to a station and from a station on the same line as where you started your trip. if you got on on the orange line in the morning, travel to an orange line station to get to the mall and when you leave the mall, go back to that same station on the orange line so you don't have to transfer. >> reporter: excellent. well, you heard it from the person who would know. the best way to get down here is take metro. we're live outside metro center. derek ward, news 4. >> derek, thanks for the update. security forces also gearing up for monday's inauguration. mpd will have about 4,000 extra officers on hand to handle the inauguration crowds. all of them men and women of the national guard sworn in yesterday. meanwhile, staff from 42 agencies will operate the joint inaugural command center where they can monitor cameras from across the district. a 30-mile no-fly zone will be in effect on monday. the coast guard is beefing

new this morning, police are looking for a suspect that shot and killed a man outside a d.c. nightclub around 2:30 this morning. officers were called out to chuck & billy's lounge near howard university. they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. he was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead a short time later. police have not released the victim's name or a possible

motive in this shooting. breaking news now in the algerian hostage situation. algerian state news agencies say its army has stormed the plant where a hostage situation has entered its fourth day, killing 11 militants. the agency also says seven hostages were killed by militants during the assault. reuters is reporting that 16 hostages were freed on saturday, including two americans. yesterday a reported 100 of the 132 foreign workers were freed, but another 12 were killed, possibly including some of the hostage takers. we're going to be watching developments from there. the time right now is 9:11. hope you're off to a great saturday so far. coming up, the big change happening at airports across the country. and after the break, nbc's own al roker is here. he's going to be talking to us about his new appearance that he'll be making in the region promoting his new book. and a chilly weekend, but that's just the beginning of cool days ahead. chuck is back with your forecast next. ♪

he dropped more than 100 pounds and 20 suit sizes. many of us watch his transformation every day. >> we have a very special guest with us this morning. the "today" show's al roker is with us this morning. >> good morning. >> talking about your book. >> yeah, "never going back." it's not really a diet book. i don't want people to they, okay, follow this step by step and you'll lose 100 pounds. it's basically my journey. i've dealt with this my entire life. it's the things i've learned, the things i've done, and also from the perspective of a spouse. my wife, who's on "20/20," it was one of those things. it was a third person in our marriage. she was in great shape, size four, always working out, and i'm sitting on the couch. it was tough. >> a lot of marriages are like that, though. >> absolutely. >> and in this book, you get very personal. you bring out stories that are

very close to your life, especially the one about your father when he was dying. he made you promise him something. did that affect your decision? >> it got me on the path. he's a terrific guy. he was dying from lung cancer. i would go to see him before i go to the "today" show. this was in 2001. he said to me one morning, he said, look, i'm really worried about you. i'm not going to be here to help you raise your kids. so you need to swear to me you're going to lose weight. ten days later he was gone. we then discovered we were pregnant with our second child, with nicki. i said, you know what, i have to do something. debra had done a couple series on gastric bypass. i had the bypass, lost 140 pounds. then my mom got sick eight years later and i gained 40 pounds back. that's the other dirty little secret about a bypass. you can eat through it. it's really the story about the things you need to do and the steps you need to take and how

you need to put yourself first in a sense before you can go on that journey. >> and it's not just the diet because you work out a lot too. >> i have a treadmill desk. i bike to work. you know, i try to -- i've ran the new york city marathon. not in the fastest of times. in fact, my daughter said, daddy, what did the snail say on top of the turtle? i don't know, sweetie, what? weee! so i'm excited to be doing a book signing at barnes & noble today. >> is it true you carry a scale with you when you travel? >> i do. when i'm gone more than two dayday days, i bring my scale with me. i'm a little ocd, but there you have it. >> can you even imagine your life without having had the surgery? >> no, no. i can't. it's like a different life. i stopped watching myself toward the end, and, you know, for example, i couldn't get -- i

just went to disney land with my son. i couldn't ride rides because they couldn't close the bar, the restraining bar. it's little things. you get on an airplane and you have to ask the flight attendant for the extender, you know. it's not fun. >> like you said, when it comes down to making that commitment that you're going to lose that weight, it really comes down to a personal decision. it comes down to yourself, not your husband, not your wife, not your work. >> by the way, for those people who love people who have a weight issue, don't nag us. shut up, okay? guess what? we know we're fat. we live in a world with mirrors. we know, okay? >> small steps, right? >> exactly. >> we have to do small steps. >> if you come to see me, barnes & noble at tyson's corner, park as far away from the front door as possible and walk. >> and don't use the escalator. >> that's what i'm going to do. in fact, i'm going to get off the metro in alexandria and just

overhead. bright sunshine bouncing off the south face of the washington monument. winds remain out of the south averaging 14 miles per hour. yes, it's a southerly breeze. that means today will be 5 to 10 degrees warmer than yesterday. if you're in the shade, you may want to watch out. little bit of a windchill for you first thing this morning. temperatures are on their way up with all the sunshine. we're already 35 in hagerstown. 33 in charlottesville. windchills remain in the upper 20s to near 30. windchills will hover in the upper 30s to near 40 for most of the day. so your hometown forecast in fredericksburg, virginia, up to near 45 degrees by lunchtime. back down into the chilly 30s in the evening. no rain around town for today. in fact, today, tomorrow, and inauguration day, three days in a row, nothing in the way of serious rain threat. that is welcome news. there is an awful lot of cold air, though, across parts of the

upper midwest and re-enforcing shots of cold air are coming our way. they start tomorrow and one shot after another takes us through sunday, monday, on into the middle of the week. today, sunshine but breezy. temperatures near 50 degrees courtesy of that south breeze. overnight tonight, winds will remain generally light and a clear sky out there. temperatures will be in the 30s to get your day started tomorrow. more chilly changes coming our way. the first in a series of cold fronts comes through here late morning to around lunchtime tomorrow. the re-enforcing shot with the really cold air behind it, that arrives here during the course of the day on monday. might be able to wring out a flurry or two around about sunset on monday. not looking for anything in the way of a big snow. for today, sunny and cool outside. breezy at times. highs today, upper 40s to near 50. that will be a nice change from yesterday. then tomorrow, plenty of sunshine once again. a little cooler as the winds come back around to the west and northwest. take about 2 or 3 degrees off for tomorrow's high.

as more re-enforcements of the cold air get here, it looks like a cold inauguration day. temperatures will be in the low to mid-20s on your way out to the national mall first thing in the morning. temperatures getting up to only around 39 degrees for a high on monday. plenty of clouds coming in. then the arctic air, yes, indeed, arctic air. a little hint of a smile out there. tuesday will mark exactly two years since we had our last sub-freezing high temperature. two years to the day. >> wow. >> hasn't been cold in a while. >> you sound excited. >> a shock to the system for everybody. >> it'll be good. it'll remind you it's winter. >> thanks, chuck. your next visit through airport security might be a little different. the tsa is removing the controversial full body scanners. they produced a near nude image of travelers. congress order the scanners produce a more generic image or they must be removed. the manufacturer says they won't be able to meet the deadline, so the tsa is getting rid of the machines.

the tsa says it's replacing them with new scan erners at airport around the country. san francisco police are investigating 49ers wide receiver michael crabtree, who's accused of sexual assault. police say the alleged assault happened last sunday in a san francisco hotel room hours after the 49ers playoff win over green bay. crabtree spoke with officers about the allegations, and police say he has cooperated fully with the investigation. crabtree is expected to play tomorrow as the 49ers square off against atlanta in the nfc championship game. notre dame linebacker manti te'o insists he was not involved in creating a fake girlfriend. te'o spoke for the first time since the scandal in an off-camera interview with espn. he maintains he was the victim of a cruel hoax. te'o says the man behind the hoax contacted him a few days ago, admitting he had fabricated the whole thing. the sports website deadspin pand

kicks off the pomp and circumstance of inauguration weekend. and we'll see festivities start this weekend with the national day of service. good morning, everyone. welcome to news 4 today. i'm richard jordan. >> and i'm angie goff. it is saturday, january 19th, 2013. right now thousands are gathering on the mall for the national day of service to honor dr. martin luther king. later tonight is the kids inaugural concert honoring military children and their families. >> tomorrow, president obama and vice president biden will be officially sworn in. monday, thor monday, the ceremonial festivities kick off. we're going to check in with meteorologist chuck bell. if it's cold out there, we're sending him out. >> reporter: ever so true. it's a real chilly start this morning. temperatures really aren't so n

intoi intolerably cold. temperatures are closing in on 40 already alongside the chesapeake bay. windchills remain in the subfreezing category this morning. heavy weight coats and scarves are definitely a mandate on your early morning activities. sunny and staying on the chilly side, but it is january, after all. kind of breezy as well today. temperatures upper 40s to near 50 degrees. enjoy it, everybody. more cool air coming our way in a real cooldown as we get towards the tuesday, wednesday time frame. more about that in a few. >> all right, chuck. thank you. this morning, metro is gearing up for this weekend's inauguration festivities. let's take a live look at metro center in northwest. that's one of the stations selling the commemorative inauguration smart trip card until 10:00 p.m. tonight. the metro is urging riders to avoid using paper tickets because of crowds and those machines. monday the smithsonian,

archives, and mt. vernon square stations will be closed for security reasons. the stations that remain open will be charging for peak times for 17 hours straight. right now, the national day of service is under way with projects all around the country to help honor dr. king's legacy. nbc's danielle lee has more now on this kickoff to inauguration weekend. >> reporter: the crowds have arrived, packed for a party. >> this is one of my bucket list experiences. >> reporter: tiffany grimes flew in from atlanta. her first stop was the national mall, where crews inside this tent laid out the final tables for today's service fair. >> over 200,000 people sign up nationwide for events in all 50 states. >> reporter: amelia is attending. she's here from new orleans. >> we want to give back. >> reporter: like four years ago, president obama has asked people nationwide to join his family and celebrate by serving. this year the president's request is especially timely.

it's just the second time an inauguration has coincided with the martin luther king jr. holiday weekend. at the rock creek conservancy, volunteers will be cutting back an invasive vine. from one labor of love to the next. organizers inside the washington convention center are setting the stage for tonight's children's concert. >> the putting the touches on the infrastructure for that up to the final minutes. >> reporter: after the concert, crews will transform the space, setting the scene for the two official inaugural balls down from ten in 2009. altogether, a handful of artists will perform throughout the weekend. the security will be tight. helicopters and jets will enforce a 30-mile no-fly zone as hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to d.c. to take part in history. in washington, i'm danielle lee, nbc news. >> and as danielle mentioned, the national day of service is already making a difference in the lives of many children in our area. >> today the greater washington urban league joins dozens of

volunteers at garfield elementary for a mission to end illiteracy. joining us is the president of the national urban league. good morning. >> good morning. >> tell us what you have planned for today. >> the national urban league and our affiliate here in washington, the greater metropolitan washington league, are participating in the day of service. we'll be working with our young professionals at a number of schools with an important focus on literacy. dr. king said everyone can be great because everyone can serve. i think the president's idea about tying the martin luther king holiday to service really at a time when we remember the 50-year anniversary of the great march on washington where dr. king made his speech is especially timely. so there will be a focus on working with kids. my hope is that this day of service inspires others to serve throughout the year. the national urban league, our affiliate in washington, and our other 95 affiliates across the country do this type of work every day, 365 days a year.

it's great to see so many americans out at schools here in washington and activities all over the nation providing and giving something back. >> and when we talk about giving something back, today you're specifically calling for people to donate books to help an unfunded library over at garfield elementary. why is this so badly needed? >> because reading is the foundation to all learning. reading is the foundation to intelligence, activism, civic engagement, and life success. we can inspire kids by making sure they have the best tools, and there's nothing like a good book or several good books for young people to read. those books you don't want, or go down and buy a book and provide that too. >> have you seen that volunteerism is accepted by the younger generation? >> i think what we see today is our young professionals who are young people between 20 and 40 years of age are really leading the way in volunteerism. i think what's exciting is that there's a generation out there very quietly, very deliberately,

canada recently ruled out a new version of some of its money, and it turns out one of the denominations is wrong. the country's new 20, 50, and 100 dollar bills now have a maple leaf on them. >> b the 20 has the wrong kind of maple leaf. an eagle-eyed botanist spotted the mistake. he says it's supposed to be the rth american sugar maple, but it's the norway sugar maple. wrong place at the wrong time to fall ill. yesterday, pennsylvania governor tom corbit was speaking at a philadelphia elementary school when a boy behind him started swaying and then fainted. the speech was put on hold for a few minutes while people made sure that boy was okay. he did come back a short time later and got a little one-on-one time with the governor. good.

right now, part of the international airport is closed. the western most runway is shut down to help accommodate private planes for inauguration weekend. the airport expects around 300 private planes will come and go. that's a far cry from 2009 when a record 700 planes flew in. the closing should not impact commercial service. be sure to keep your eyes open and your cameras ready as celebrities are rolling into town for this weekend's event. beyonce and jay-z, kelly clarkson, james taylor, and katy

perry are just a few of the stars coming to the district to take part in this weekend's inauguration. beyonce, clarkson, and taylor are all slated to perform on monday at the capitol. two major political figures will not be at the inauguration. presidents george h.w. bush and george w. bush will not be attend. the elder bush was released from the houston hospital earlier this week and is recovering from bronchitis. george w. bush has not given a are why he's not attending but did release a statement wishing the obama family all the best. many who cannot make it to the president's swearing in plan to watch the motorcade ride down pennsylvania avenue. news 4's pat collins takes us behind the scenes for the how behind the wow of the big event. >> reporter: welcome to hargrove

headquarters. 359,000 square feet, eight football fields. a warehouse and workplace. they have things here you'll never find in grandma's attic. the washington monument. on the other side of a palm tree, another one. can't have too many of these. mardi gras mask, super sized. teddy bear. they have all sorts of things stored here because when you're in the float make business, you never know what sort of things you may need to make it happen. the hargrove company has been making floats for the inaugural parade sense 1949. over the years, they've designed, built, painted, and hauled hundreds of floats down pennsylvania avenue. they've done it for democrats. they've done it for republicans. because when it comes to making floats, they've got the formula.

>> each float has to have an element of surprise that no one expects. >> reporter: these are the foundations of some of the floats for the inaugural parade. just a bunch of plywood and carpet and wheels now. it all starts right after the first of the year and then it gets frenetic. it gets fast paced because they don't have much time to transform all of this into something that's wonderful. >> it's bigger than most people think. it's thousands of man hours to fabricate the things that we do here for the inaugural. >> reporter: that's fred strickland. he once worked in the guided missile business. now he's the float boss for hargrove. he oversees the designs, the welders, the carpenters, the sewers, the painters, all working nonstop to bring the wow to the parade. >> when it turns that corner on pennsylvania avenue and there's something you've never seen

before, so large, so beautiful, right in front of you on such a special day. >> and you know you've done your job. >> you can tell by the smiles on their faces that we've done our job. >> reporter: okay, it may not be rocket science, but it takes a lot of imagination and hard work to bring that magic on inauguration day. pat collins, news 4. >> a whole new appreciation for those floats. >> it's so cool how the floats honor the backgrounds of the first and second families. a lot to look forward to. also at this time, we want to give a quick shoutout to all of the students at horizon elementary in sterling, virginia. the principal and staff invited me to be the guest pronouncer. i was so nervous. i prepared. i spent two days reading over the binders. these kids, i was so impressed by them. we went ten full rounds. it was very intense. parents were in the crowd. if you've ever seen the documentary "spell bound," it

having just been on the front lawn of channel 4, that south breeze has a bit of a windchill factor today. air temperatures, upper 30s, pushing 40 already. windchill temperatures remain in the upper 20s to around 30 degrees. it's taking a solid ten degrees off the air temperature. that's going to be persistent through the remainder of the day today. your hour-by-hour forecast, temperatures on their way up. we're up near 40 degrees already. we're going to climb today up to 49 for a high temperature. again, windchills will keep it feeling more like 39 or 40. back down to the chilly 30s we'll go as soon as the sun goes down this evening. no rain to worry about. it will be 100% dry for today and tomorrow. only real chance for precipitation this weekend as the arctic air really starts to spill in on monday afternoon. might be able to wring out a flurry or two. not talking accumulations monday night, just passing snow flurries at times. sunny and breezy and chilly today. feeling chilly, i should say. temperatures will actually be three or four degrees warmer than average for mid-january. clear skies and cool again

tonight. low temperatures in the low 30s. not all that cold to get your day start. a series of cold fronts coming through. front number one comes in tomorrow. front number two arrives here on monday. behind each one of those, more and more pushes of cold air. we might have our first subfreezing high temperature in two years coming up on tuesday. for today, sunny, cool, and breezy. highs today, upper 40s to near 50, but keep your jackets and stay on the sunny side of the street. then for tomorrow, again, plenty of sunshine, a hint cooler tomorrow, only by a couple degrees, though. winds out of the northwest tomorrow at about 15 miles per hour. it will make it feel awfully cool. your big inauguration day, expect temperatures in the mid-20s early in the morning, climbing just above the freezing mark by noontime when the swearing in takes place, the ceremonial swearing in, that is. temperatures for the parade generally in the upper 30s to near 40. the real cold air is rushing in during the day monday.

sherwood. >> all right, tom. >> we know people love that swag. thanks. we are counting down to inauguration as well as what you need to know if you're trying to get around town. drivers might want to avoid downtown completely. the memorial bridge will be closed along with several streets. many around capitol hill, including some ramps from 395 will close at 3:00 a.m. on monday. police say that even if you do avoid those streets, you can expect some delays. parking will be strictly enforced. d.c. taxis will charge $1 surcharge for every extra passenger. >> today, metro continues to get ready for the mad rush of inauguration day. the agency is trying to get the word out to the thousands expected to take metro about what they can expect on the big day. news 4's derek ward is live at metro center with what everyone can expect. hey, derek. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, what they can expect is a lot of people riding along with them. metro says it's not too early. as a matter of fact, this is the prime time to start planning

your trip on metro. we've got a map that will show you some of the stations that are closed for the inaugural. all of the stations, all of the lines have a station that will get you close to the activity. metro says it's best to go today or tomorrow to buy your tickets. anybody over five years old must have a fare card. a lot of people will be getting these commemorative inaugural cards. we got some video of folks earlier today when the sales office here at metro center opened. there were about 12 people in line immediately. that line subsided a little bit, but it's coming and going. metro will be operating on a special service, a schedule, as we hear from metro spokesperson. >> it's an all hands on deck day for us with an incredible amount of services. actually, the same service that we operated in 2009, which was our all-time record high for the entire history of metro. we'll be opening three hours early at 4:00 a.m. we'll be running 17 consecutive

of rush hour service levels. so until 9:00 p.m. for rush hour. the system will stay open later until 2:00 a.m. >> reporter: and of course getting back will be an issue as well. they suggest you go back on the line or at the station you got off on. that way you'll avoid some of those crowds and won't get a big rush at one particular station. metro will be turning the down escalators off. there's a braking system o those escalators that possibly could fail in there are too many people on that. we don't want that to happen. now, they're going to be locking them to to ensure that won't happen. we're live in metro center. derek ward, news 4. >> thanks, derek. people on bicycles will also have certain restrictions this inauguration weekend. d-dot is setting a bike route for capital bike share. there will also be bike parking at 16th and i northwest.

police are urging cyclists and motorists to share the road. d.c. is bringing in lots of extra security this weekend. mpd will have about 6,000 extra officers on hand to handle the inauguration crowd. all of them men and women of the national guard sworn in yesterday. meanwhile, staff from 42 agencies will operate the joint inaugural command center where they can monitor cameras from across the district. a 30-mile no-fly zone will be in effect on monday. the coast guard is beefing up security as well from tomorrow through tuesday. recreation boating will be closed. last inauguration the coast guard shut down water taxis and dinner boats, which angered many companies. nbc 4 is the place to catch inauguration day start to finish. we'll begin at 4:00 a.m. on

new this morning, police are looking for a gunman that shot and killed a man outside a d.c. nightclub. around 2:30 this morning, officers were called out to chuck & billy's lounge near howard university. they found a man suffering from

gunshot wounds. he was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead a short time later. police have not released the victim's name or possible motive in the shooting. police in virginia are looking for a dog who attacked a person at a school. the dog, described as similar to a pit bull, attacked someone yesterday at thomas jefferson elementary in falls church. officers are looking for the dog as well as the two men who let it run loose. police say the victim may need ray bibies shots if they can't that dog. coming up next, how some d.c. fifth graders helped recreate a famous moment in history. and the sun is shining, but the big question is, can we stay pleasant and dry all the way through the holiday forecast? don't go away. the details are next. ♪

it is now just about 15 minutes after 10:00 on your saturday morning. your weekend is off to a chilly start, but it is january, after all. we expect a little cold air in our wintertime. it's been a mild winter to this point, but there are signs that some real arctic air is coming our way. it starts to arrive here on inauguration day, monday. for now, though, what a beautiful picture out over washington. the monument shining brightly in the bright sunshine this morning. the old post office pavilion there. beautiful day outside today. temperatures are climbing quickly. we've now made 40 degrees at national airport. winds remain out of the south, averaging 9 miles per hour. the southwest winds today will help. yesterday we only made 40, 41 for a high temperature. today we'll do almost 10 degrees better than that. yesterday we had a northerly wind. today the winds have come back around to the south, but nonetheless temperatures in the 30s and 40s with that much of a breeze has temperatures near the

freezing mark. if you're going to be outside for a long period of time, definitely dress in players today. good news is the bright sunshine is out there. highs today will climb into the middle and upper 40s for most. a few cold spots. it'll be breezy around town, even a little closer to the windy category as you get into the high spots. quantico, virginia, your forecast. temperatures now at 39 degrees. looking for a high of 48 with full sunshine, a clear sky, and temperatures back down to the 30s by 9:00, 10:00 this evening. don't need to worry about rain today or tomorrow. the only precipitation chance that we have coming to us over the next several days might be able to wring out a few snow flurries on monday as some arctic air really moves back in. today, high pressure down to our south will provide that southerly breeze. sunny and nice today. temperatures above average again for a time. then we get pretty chilly again overnight. back into the 30s for most. we have a little bit of cloud cover coming our way tonight with cold front number one. that arrives here during the

anything, it's that movement matters. people actually being invested in the future of their community matters. we hope people will take from this day understanding that dr. king really was a servant first. >> the president and first lady have really spearheaded this volunteering movement and kind of given a different significance to martin luther king j.r. dr. day. before, it was a holiday, but it didn't have an activity tied to it. now there is. do you see that growing? >> we see it growing, and we see it also helping for this next generation to understand the values and what they must be. >> what's the reaction you get from kids when you're out there in the community? are they open to serving others? >> kids really do. i think frankly, if our country moved towards compulsory national service, and all of us
